YOUR POSITION WITH TNC


 

The Science Fellow (Fellow) works closely with staff of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Chapter in MN, ND, and SD to research and gather conservation planning and other science data. The Fellow creates relevant reports and data records to support the Chapter’s priority conservation strategies. As a member of the Science Team, the Fellow will tackle the scientific uncertainties around the Conservancy’s priority conservation strategies. The Fellow will assist in many facets of conservation science, including communicating science to the public, conservation planning, managing data, and more traditional research and monitoring projects. The Fellow will work on projects across all three of the major habitat types in the Chapter (Forests, Freshwater and Grasslands), with an emphasis on forest ecology and climate adaptation. The Fellow will help streamline data collection and management and synthesize science for a variety of research and monitoring projects. They will add capacity to emerging conservation issues within the Chapter, such as carbon benefits from improved forest management, adaptive management in grassland and forests, and climate adaptation within the context of these other emerging issues. The Fellow will have the opportunity to help lead working groups around science needs for monitoring and/or climate adaptation.

The Science Fellow is a full-time (35 hours/week), 2-year position with the Minnesota-North Dakota-South Dakota Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. The supervisor for this role is based in Moorhead, MN. The preferred location for this position is northern MN but we are open to all locations within the Chapter’s geography. The preferred start date for this role is September 2022. The anticipated salary range for this position is $46,000-$56,000 heavily dependent on location. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


 

The Science Fellow gathers and synthesizes data for priority research and monitoring projects. They assist with leading working groups of scientists and practitioners around conservation science needs and/or developing and implementing conservation plans. They conduct scientific surveys, record data and write project reports to help coordinate science needs in support of conservation programs within the chapter.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

 
  • Performs and coordinate fieldwork, including ecosystem assessment and vegetation monitoring.
  • Compiles and analyze data, resolve disparities, and modify processes to generate plans and reports.
  • May work with small group of staff, interns, partners or volunteers on a project basis.
  • May purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Assist with proposal writing, report writing, and partnership development for current and emerging science priorities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in science related field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with GIS software and data to create maps.
  • Experience conducting surveys, recording data and writing project reports.
  • Experience collecting, manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting scientific data.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Strong field skills and ability to lead and conduct fieldwork. Working knowledge of computer technology and common software applications, such as ArcGIS, program R and the Microsoft office suite.
  • Master's Degree in science related field and 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Clearly written, spoken and graphical communication in English.
  • Demonstrated experience in communicating science in written and oral formats.
  • Ability to work independently and/or with minimal supervision.
